BotsIQ Competition at Washington County Fair

Visit the Washington County Fair, Wednesday, July 23, 12:00pm-4:00pm to see teams from around the county battle their Bots.  What is BotsIQ? " BotsIQ is the most dynamic vehicle in the last decade to expose high school and junior high school students to today's business requirements and needs in a direct hands-on basis".   It exposes students to the rewards of working in a computer-based manufacturing environment.  Beginning Fall 2008, Germantown High School will be offering BotsIQ as an extra curricular activity.  The Washington County Fair is located at Hwy. PV, West Bend (directions:  Hwy. 45 north to Pleasant Valley Road exit)

Parent Night at Germantown High School

Not sure where to begin when it comes to potential career opportunities for your student? There will be several Germantown manufacturing representatives available to talk to you about some of those opportunities at Parent Night on Wednesday, September 10th, 6:30pm-8:30pm at Germantown High School, in the cafeteria.  They can answer your questions about types of careers available right out of high school, classes your student should be taking in high school and continued education.  Ask about earning potential, benefits and working environments.  Then come see for yourself at our next set of Family Tours of Germantown manufacturers (see below).  There may be a BotsIQ for parents to get a firsthand look and even a hands-on demonstration of a product of this exciting, new program.

Family Tours
Germantown area manufacturing facilities will open their doors to provide tours to interested students and parents.  The tours will present information regarding the many career opportunities available in the local manufacturing community and provide a look at the technologies Germantown companies use to do business locally, regionally, nationally, and globally.

The next set of tours is scheduled for: Wednesday, 9/17/08, 4:00pm-7:00pm and Saturday, 9/20/08, 9:00am-12:00am.  Watch for a listing of manufacturers open for tours.

Manufacturing Career Expo

The Germantown Chamber of Commerce is working with the Menomonee Falls Community Chamber to organize a Manufacturing Career Expo featuring manufacturing representatives from both communities.  There will be seminars on interviewing, workplace expectations, and possibly a BotsIQ demonstration.  Watch for more details.

Second Chance Program

Germantown High School has approved participating in the Second Chance Program beginning Fall 2008.  Speaker Corp., Germantown, has been a sponsor of the program and is incorporating classroom space for Second Chance in its new facility being built in Germantown.  Current students in the program are attending classes at a Menomonee Falls facility until Fall 2009 when the Speaker site is complete. Speaker Corp. is the anchor company providing classroom space; they are looking for 3 to 4 partners right now and eventually 5 to 6 partners when the program is a full model.  Any manufacturers interested in becoming involved in this program, please contact Jamie Speaker, co-President, or Leann McKune, Human Resources, 262-251-6660.  Second Chance:  Good for the Community; Good for Business Future; Good for Education.

Manufacturing Focus Group
Mission Statement:

  1. To facilitate the communication of relevant issues between our manufacturing community and the public and private organizations which can and will provide support to provide healthy and sustainable business operations.
  2. To present programs and services available locally and in the greater Metropolitan area that enhance the efficiency of businesses operations and, which are not otherwise available. (and)
  3. To provide a forum where there is a free exchange of ideas between and amongst industrial representatives in the area.

Accomplishments of the group to date:

  • 3/22/06   Mfg. Focus committee toured GHS classrooms for firsthand look at facilities & equipment
  • 5/16/06   Mfg. Focus Group, school tech ed teachers (High school & middle school) & guidance counselors toured 6 manufacturers
  • 6/19/06   Letter to School Board informing them of Mfg. Focus Group and high school alliance and asking for their support
  • Fall 2006  Chamber newsletter introduces Manufacturers’ Page
  • 9/13/06 Parent Back to School Night  -  information and individuals available to talk to parents about careers in manufacturing; awareness building
  • 9/25/06   Mfg. Focus Group appears before Germantown School Board
  • 11/1 & 11/4   Tours  -  Eleven manufacturers gave tours
  • 12/5/06   Presentation by Pat Moerchen, MGS Mfg. Group on his experience working at MGS and being tech ed teacher at Kewaskum HS
  • 12/11/06  Start conversations about curriculum enhancements to technology areas
  • 1/27/07   Second set of tours at 7 area manufacturers
  • February 2007   Best Practices meetings begin
  • Spring 2007   Continue talks about how best to affect curriculum to serve what is needed by manufacturers.  Talked about placing manufacturers as mentors in classroom periodically to “hear & see” what is being taught.  Support teacher in life applications of what is being taught.  Offer by Len Riebau to mentor woodworking.
  • Fall 2007  Several manufacturers attend actual classes in woodworking,  to make observations and discuss current curriculum.  Other mentor relationships are being formed.
  • LiftCo of Germantown has become a strong partner in the automotive program at the high school.
  • MATC begins a Workplace Skills Center at the Germantown Community Library.  Course offerings aimed at incumbent workers.  First course:  Manufacturing Mathematics Computation.  Next courses working on for summer 2008:  computer applications and communicating in an industrial setting.
  • Family Tours offered by five Germantown manufacturers; attendance increasing.
